The Buildings History

A historical building that played a key part in World War II. Known locally as “Winston Churchill's Toyshop”, it was the HQ of a highly secret weapons research, development and testing site which played a crucial role in the Allied victory.

The house was built in 1897 for Charles Gray, an officer who fought with the Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa. By the 1930s it was owned by Major Arthur Abrahams from whom it was requisitioned by the War Office in 1939.

During the Second World War the property was occupied by MD1 for the manufacturing of various weapons including time delay fuses, depth charges and PIAT guns, at its height employing some 250 people.

The Development

A refined and sophisticated development boasting generous proportions and luxury finishes throughout. Upon entering the building, you are greeted by a period entrance hallway which has retained its original parquet flooring, part original Tudor wall panelling and the most beautiful stained glass window. Opulent kitchens with quartz worktops, wine fridges and quality appliances have been installed throughout. Indulgent bathrooms with walk in showers, roll top claw foot baths and contemporary tiling help to enhance the feeling of luxury which has been created. Each of the bedrooms has sumptuous 100% wool carpets and lavish fixtures and fittings. The majority of these homes come complete with private outdoor gardens which are perfect for alfresco dining. Each apartment also comes with a minimum of two allocated car parking spaces, whilst the two premier apartments have the added benefit of EV charge points.

"Original features have been restored and are enhanced by the tasteful addition of luxury fixtures and fittings which elevate the space for generations to come."
