The £11 million National Science Learning Centre, at the University of York, officially opened by former Prime Minister, Tony Blair, proudly welcomed its students after Stonehouse Projects completed a contract to furnish their entire Centre.
Specialising in commercial interiors, Stonehouse created an environment that was in tune with the technical and practical needs of the Centre, yet provided a vibrant and stimulating nucleus for study. The only one of its kind in the world, this purpose built, high tech venue provides professional development for science teachers and technicians from across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Centre Director, Professor John Holman, explains why the National Science Learning Centre was built, “The rate of scientific progress and change across industry and research has created a real need for subject specific development for science educators. The National Science Learning Centre will draw on the expertise of academic and industrial scientists to meet this need. It is therefore important that the ambience of the building provides an energetic and motivating centre for study. This was our plan and I feel we have achieved it.”
The hub of the centre: the entrance and bespoke reception, was designed to create a relaxed atmosphere, ensuring that the teachers and technicians who attend are met with warmth in a highly contemporary and modern area, the concept of which flows throughout the entire building.
The earthy tones and rich veneers within Centre’s restaurant and bar wouldn’t look out of place in a cosmopolitan city venue, where the soft lighting adds to the calming and relaxed atmosphere. This too was designed by Stonehouse, with specialist bespoke elements including the bar and soft seating area.
Steve Waugh, for Stonehouse, described the Centre as “a mix of contemporary first impressions; stylish, relaxed space coupled with professional, intensive learning and development areas. This project was delivered on time within the set budget and one we are incredibly proud of. The finished result is amazing!”
