Case Study

National STEM Centre, York

After working closely with Sir John Holman (National STEM Director and Head of the National Science Learning Centre) and his team to furnish the NSLC, York Stonehouse were asked to supply a similar scheme for the National STEM Centre, housed within the £11 million NSLC building.

STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering and mathematics; the key objectives of this unique centre were to house the UK’s largest collection of STEM teaching and learning resources, and to bring together STEM partners with a shared mission to support STEM education. It was therefore essential that a truly innovative scheme was created to facilitate the housing of these resources and the redevelopment of this space.

Stonehouse were tasked with providing an innovative design that mirrored the ethos of the centre, and provided a platform for teachers and lecturers to further develop their skills. Initially to gain approval for the scheme we created 3D moving visuals, which allowed the client a ‘walk-through’ experience of the ‘new’ space. Once we had the STEM team on board with our vision, we set to work to bring this cool bright, yet minimalist design to life.

The scope of works included bespoke book cases made from the highest quality materials, complete with integrated plasma TV’s, and colour change fibre optic lighting that reinforced the brand identity of the STEM Centre. Stonehouse also produced storage that needed to fit around a spiral staircase, especially intricate as each angle had to exactly match the angle and radius of the staircase. Fit out works included re-configuring power and data, re-cladding supporting columns to ensure seamlessness, and re-carpeting and re-decorating the entire area, along with supplying loose and soft furnishings.

The end result is a bright innovative design, which creates a superb working environment and an ideal platform to facilitate the support materials for those who educate the brightest and most creative minds to become scientists and engineers. The creativity of the design and the high quality craftsmanship and quality of the products Stonehouse provided was essential to create a truly unique space for visitors and staff alike.
